The changes that the self–styled 'Hairy Cornflake' was referring to involved the replacement of various 'old school' presenters (including DLT himself, obviously) with others who might appeal to a younger audience. Radio 1 was 26 years old in 1993, and it was no secret that its audience had 'matured' along with it; the recently–appointed controller, Matthew Bannister, was keen to attract a younger demographic.
Matthew Bannister is better known today, to a certain audience, as the presenter of Radio 4's obituary programme, Last Word.
